Amara (@amaratweets) is a lecturer and researcher in Microbiology. Amara has worked at a number of FE and HE institutions across the UK, particularly focused on supporting a diverse student population in gaining access to Higher Education. Amara believes that education, self-awareness and cultivating productive relationships are the essential tools required for building successful careers.

The Aspiring Professionals Hub was created as an extension of the academic development work as an Academic Mentor, helping my students with the transition into Higher Education and supporting them in identifying and utilising the skills they required for whatever their next step was. Having spent about half of a decade, working with a team of early career scientists to plan and execute career development events for early career researchers, Amara was able to gain some insight into skills and knowledge ‘gaps’ which can stand between ECRs and their professional goals. Our mission is to try and fill these gaps with the help of our wonderful community.

Amara is particularly interested in promoting scientific careers to young people and regularly takes up opportunities to speak at careers fairs and engage with the public about science. I am always happy to have a conversation. Our most powerful learning encounters come via dialogue. Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn and @amaratweets.
